Types of Diabetes

Type 1 Diabetes

Type 1 diabetes occurs because the insulin-producing cells of the pancreas are damaged, producing little or no insulin and causing blood sugar levels to rise. Individuals with must use insulin injections to control blood sugar.

Type 2 Diabetes

Type 2 diabetes occurs when not enough insulin is being produced. When there is not enough insulin or the insulin is not used as it should be, sugar cannot get into the body's cells for use as energy, causing blood sugar to rise. Some individuals can manage type 2 with exercise and diet while others might need medications.
